State of Kentucky County of Barren Sct

On the 19th day of September 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Judge of the circuit court of Barren County & Circuit now sitting HENRY CARTER a resident of Barren County & State of Kentucky aged 80 years thr 25th day of June 1832, who being first duely sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7 1832.
That he entered the service of the United State & ... herein states. He served under Col. CHARLES SCOTT enlisted under Captain GEORGE STUBBLEFIELD, & marched from Williamsburgh, the place of Rendevoux, under Major PARKER to Norfolk & Portsmouth & served two years in the Regular Army or Continental line or Virginia State line, he is not certain which. He entered the Army he thinks about the year 1776 in the beginning of the year and left the service in 1777 or early in 1778 in the winter time, He was at the taking of the Hessians on the 26th of December 1776 having marched about 6 miles in the night & suffering much with the cold & it being snowing at the time the Hessians were taken. He was at Philadelphia, New Ark, marched through Jersey before the British & corssed the Rive in the Army under Gen. WASHINGOTN & Col. CHARLES SCOTT & was at the Battles of Trenton & Princeton. He obtained a Discharge but not expecting ever to have use for it, has mislaid or lost it. It can not now be found at the time he entered the service in the Regualr Army, he lived in Spottylvania about 18 miles from Fredericksburgh Virginina to which place he returned in the winter of 1777. He was also drafted in about one month after he returned home, as a soldier in the Militia of Virginina & served under Capt. THOMAS CRUTCHER, Lieut BRANNUM, Ensign CLAYTON. He does not recollect his field officers. A the time he served about 3 months & marched to Richmond, & Jamestown, the British giving way before them. He obtained a discharge, can not now recollect the place he obtained it at & he then returned home. He served two or three other tours in the Virginia State Militia, but he has now entirely forgotten the particulars of them, the length, the officers he served under or ?? in the service of his county he know Gen. WASHINGTON, Col. PARKER, Genl. SCOTT, Lieut HUCKLBERRY, Genl, STUBAND, Col. ANDERSON, & many others. He has no documentary evidence of, nor does he know of any person whose testimony he ( the next line not copied on the microfilm reader)... every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension roll of the Agency of any state. We ZACHARIAH EMERSON, a clergyman residing in the county of Barren & JOHN DUFF residing in the same county hereby certify that we are well acquainted with HENRY CARTER who has subscribed & sworn to the above Declaration, that we believe him to be 80 years of age; that he is reputed & believe in the neighbourhood where he resided to have been a soldier in the Revolution and we concur in that opinion. 1. Where & in what year were you born?
In Spottsylvanian County, 18 miles of Fredericksburgh in 1752
 
2. Have you any record of your age?
If so, where ist it? I have. It is in the family Bible at my house
 
3. Where were you living when called into the service? Where have you lived since the Revolutionary War? Where do you now live?
At Spottylvanina, about 18 miles from Frederickburgh, since the war I hve live in Spottsylvanina & in Faquier County, from which place I moved 20 years ago to Barren County Ky, where I have lived ever since & this time
 
4. How were you called in service?
Enlisted in the Regular Army first, then drafted in the Militia
 
5. State the name of the Regular officers who you served with, the namer of some regiments & general circumstances:
Col. PARKER, Col. SCOTT, Genl. WASHINGTON, HENRY VOWLS, A.J. WITANTE(?) and many others. I served in the 5th Virginina Regiment, and at the battle fo Princeton, Trenton, & at the taking of the Hessians.
 
6. Did you ever receive a Discharge, if so by whom was it given, & what has become of it?
I did, do not recollect by whom it was given, it is now lost.
 


And the said court do hereby declare this, after the investigation of the matter, have after ?? the interrogations prescribed by the War Department, that the above name applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states And the court futher certifies, that it appeard to them that ZACHARIAH EMERSON who has signed the preceding certificate is a clergyman receiving in the County of Barren & that JOHN DUFF, who has also signed the same is a Residant in the County of Barren & is a credible person, & that their statement is entitlted to credit.
I, RICHARD GARNETT, clerk of the Circuit Court of Barren County Cicuit & I do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said court in ths matter of the application of HNERY CARTER for a pension. Covering Jacket: Kentucky 4732 Henry Carter, Barren Ky, Pr. in the regiments of Col. Scott in the Va line for 2 years from 1776. Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of $80 per annum to commence on the 4th day of March, 1834.
